4-Day Weekend

November 26, 2006 - 10:33 pm 1 Comment

Ahh…Thanksgiving. Even though Christmas may be a ‘bigger’ holiday and is still to come, there’s just something really nice about a holiday that is always on a Thursday and working for a company that’s generous enough to allow it’s employees to take the day after it off. Christmas falls on a Monday this year, though, so that amounts to a 3-day weekend, but I think I’m going to take some vacation days before Christmas to extend that out a little longer.

As most of you know, Candice and I are moving to Colorado very soon. This is good in some ways and bad in others, but one thing we’ve learned living here is that New York is an excellent place to live/work/play if you have money to spend, but an ‘ok’ place to live otherwise–basically we enjoy ourselves more when we have more cash to burn through (and trust me there are plenty of things to spend money on here,) but when the money runs low, so do the good times unfortunately. And for us, the ‘bad’ outweighs the ‘good’ at this point in time as far as New York City is concerned, and hence our upcoming move to CO. Perhaps one day we will be back, but probably not for a few years.

Since there is so much stuff to do here (and yes, there are quite a few free or cheap things to do,) I thought it was about time to fit in some extra ‘touristy’ activities in before the big move. I created an album, which you can access here, that has all the pictures that I took today (unfortunately, Candice took our nice camera, so I had to suffice with the camera on my phone.)

Some of the stuff I saw/did today included:

Geocaching/Walking around on Roosevelt Island

-Visited Grant’s Tomb

-Walked through parts of Columbia University

-Took pictures of Tom’s Restaurant (ya know, from Seinfield!)

Here are some of the photo highlights of my day:

Ruins on Roosevelt Island

Cathedral on the Upper West Side

happy thanksgiving!

1 new album…and addendum

today we tried to fit some fun in, and since we have a limited number of weekends left here in ny, we decided to go ice skating in central park. but when we were faced with the ice skating rink, tons of people, loud music, and a nearly $50 fee, we decided to soak up the ambiance elsewhere. which basically means we sat in the checkers pavillion and watched people, dogs, squirrels, and a neighboring photo shoot. 🙂

oops, sorry guys! cheryl’s spot in the live chat made me realize that maybe not everybody knows what our plans are. and since they’re official, we feel comfortable in making them public. 🙂 eric and i are moving to colorado next month! yaaay! that’s why i took a quick trip out there last weekend, so scout out living situations, areas, distances, etc. and alot of details are still up in the air right now, but we *are* going to be rolling on out of new york in december. and i’ll admit, it’s going to be bittersweet, because although we totally love where we’re moving to, we’ve made some really nice friends here and, to be quite honest, new york wormed its way into our hearts. we may complain and moan about certain aspects of city life, but there’s just nothing else like new york city! and if we could, we would totally own/rent a second apartment/house here in the city (we’ve already talked about it…hehe).

so while we’re very excited to move back to a more rural lifestyle, we’ll actually miss new york very much. and though we won’t miss the communal germs and homeless people on the subway or the drunk guy falling down on the bus, we will totally miss the overall feeling and experience that is new york (okay, maybe we’ll miss the homeless people, too, and *maybe* the drunk guy, cause it’s not everywhere where a drunk guy does a face-plant on the bus and people *actually* help him up and ask if he’s allright with genuine concern and humor).

in closing, if we win the lottery, new york city is the first place we’d buy an apartment in! and it hasn’t seen the last of us, not by a long shot! 😀
