Co-location.
Today I didn’t go in to work until about 1pm. The reason being is that our web site is being moved from one co-location company to a different one. We had to do some of it later in the day to lessen the negative impact in case something didn’t go smoothly after we moved the servers. Luckily for us, the two companies are in the same building–they’re just on differenty floor. The building takes up and entire city block though, and each company happens to be on opposite sides. Take a look at this map–it’s pretty amazing. The behemoth building to the lower-left of the ‘address baloon’ is where I spent most of my day today. Billions and billions of dollars worth of equipment are housed in there. I thought it was all pretty facinating.
It’s been a tiring day, but I learned a lot. For one thing, it was the first time I had been to a world-class data-center/hosting site. Our servers are housed in the same place that is host to mega-companies like Time-Warner and Sprint. Only thing is that they use entire rooms filled with 500 server racks and we only use three (racks).

that’s really interesting stuff. i’d like to see a big server room myself sometime. when you’re back out here in sacramento you need to come by the tv station and see what our racks look like. our new setup is pretty trick and there are some damn awesome looking cable runs.
