workin’ late, makin’ bucks.
After my regularly-schedule j0b, for the past 2 days I’ve been going over to a co-workers house to help him set up his home theatre, so I haven’t been getting home until 11pm or so. 😐 Unfortunately for me, the subway trains run extremely slowly at that hour of the day, so it ends up taking me over a half-hour longer than usual to get home. Today, I decided to take a cab at least part way back–it costs more, but it would take a lot less time to get to where I needed to be. I hailed a cab on 1st ave in Manhattan. Unforuntately, I had forgotten that I only had $4 cash in my pocket, so as soon as I realized this, I notified the cab driver. Luckily for me, he was a very nice guy–he drove me to 42nd st (from 20th st) for four bucks, and told me “it’s okay man, maybe next time.” So, here’s to generous cab drivers and everyone else out there willing to give the odd guy a break once in a while. And Happy Birthday wishes to Jakkie! 🙂

Wow! you were lucky on that cabbie! You don’t walk a mile from the subway in Astoria at 11 pm do you? Okay, I didn’t mean for that to sound panicky!

OHMYG-D, Mr. P. Listen, Kid, I guess I should have told you long ago. WE New Yorkers *never* leave home without an extra $20 bill somewhere on us.
Women usually carry it in their bra—if they wear one—or in the elastic of our undies. Men carry it under the insole of a shoe.
The reasons are a little difficult to explain because I know your parents read your blog, but I’m gonna say it as gently as I can.
ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO GIVE A MUGGER.
There I said it.
Why the heck didn’t you ask the cabbie to take you to an ATM and pull out the fare?
Did you happen to write down the Hack License number and/or the TAXI number? This guy deserves a reward from his union for not taking you to the nearest police station—which, BTW, is what NYC law prescribes.
And, exactly how did you get home without walking at *that* time of night? DAMN! You are not in Kansas anymore.
XXX,
Lorrie
