Boy did I have a fun time getting to work today.. I was pretty tired when I woke up this morning, so I lazed around and took a little longer than usual to get ready. So I was going to be 15 minutes late to work–big deal. I take my usual 1-mile hike to the subway station only to find out that all Manhatten-(where I work)bound trains were suspended due to (choose one:) a fire/signal problems. Whatever the reason, hundreds and hundreds of inconvienienced people, mumbling and grumbling, had to find alternate transportation to work, including me. I had a chance meetup with Samantha, who was also in the same predicament as me. We decided (along with many, many other people) the quickest way to get to Manhatten was to take the bus, then transfer to a train that wasn’t suspended. We stood in a line that went around the block to try to get on a bus. Luckily for us, we were pretty close to the front of the line. I had never taken the bus into Manhatten from Queens, so that was an experience. Eventually, I caught a working train and made it to work.. and was only an hour and 15 minutes late. The joys of public transportation. 😉
life in the city..
new hair!!!
yay! i *finally* got a new haircut, thanks to a very thoughtful gift certificate from my hubby-poo, which was accompanied by flowers, too. 🙂

yes, i could have just used one pic, but i like it SO MUCH! i don’t think i’ve ever been this happy with my hair before. 🙂 thanks eric! i really like how it is angled up in back to the nape of my neck.
i got it done at SPAce on ditmars blvd. it was really worth it to pay 5 bucks more for a ‘master stylist,’ or whatever they call it. of course it always looks better when they style it with their super-blow dryers. 😉

and who could forget our little puppy? here he is napping on a pile of pillows like a sultan.
and now i am finishing a bag of chocolate covered raisinettes…yum! maybe i’ll make superpretzels today.
oh, did i mention i got, or will have, tickets to see martha stewart?! 🙂 thanks to lorrie i might be able to go twice!
mmmmmm….
yummm…we just had the yummiest dinner we’ve had in a while! 🙂 in celebration of the delightful change in weather, i decided to make a ‘comfort food’ dinner. i made ‘special k’ loaf (yummy!), ”ol no. 7′ yams (which ended up being ‘wild turkey’ yams), and apple crumble pie. ‘special k’ loaf is a perenial favorite around here and the yams were so delicious that i’m going to make ‘wild turkey’ or ‘no. 7’ yams every time i make candied yams. the apple pie is also a wonderfully delicious and easy and cheap pie. i always use frozen pie crusts since i don’t have the counter space and all i need is apples, sugar, flour, butter and spices and i have a pie :).
we also took a stroll up to ditmars to buy some pumpkins for halloween. spoooooooookie!
A relaxing weekend..
The weather around here is definitely in a state of change. From Friday afternoon and all day Sunday, it’s been raining with the humidity hovering around the 90th-percentile. That wouldn’t have been so bad had it not been around 80 degrees, making for a very muggy situation here in NYC. But just overnight on Saturday, the temperature dropped to about 55 degrees with a high of 65 on Sunday today (thank goodness!) and is supposed to stay that way for the rest of the week.. I think hot weather is a thing of the past from here on out…
Candice and I stayed home most of Saturday since it was raining and all. We ordered a pizza and watched videos at home during the evening. Last week was extremely busy for me at work since I had to move a bunch of servers to our new co-location service provider. I’m glad that’s done now.. no more 12 hour days for me!

you gotta read this article from businessweek online entitled “wal-mart’s giant sucking sound’. *so* true!
A Cassette Deck for the PC
Wow. I never thought I’d see a ‘PC-enabled’ cassette tape player, but here it is:

For those of you wishing to convert your old tape collection to MP3s, this is probably the coolest solution. 😉
Co-location.
Today I didn’t go in to work until about 1pm. The reason being is that our web site is being moved from one co-location company to a different one. We had to do some of it later in the day to lessen the negative impact in case something didn’t go smoothly after we moved the servers. Luckily for us, the two companies are in the same building–they’re just on differenty floor. The building takes up and entire city block though, and each company happens to be on opposite sides. Take a look at this map–it’s pretty amazing. The behemoth building to the lower-left of the ‘address baloon’ is where I spent most of my day today. Billions and billions of dollars worth of equipment are housed in there. I thought it was all pretty facinating.
It’s been a tiring day, but I learned a lot. For one thing, it was the first time I had been to a world-class data-center/hosting site. Our servers are housed in the same place that is host to mega-companies like Time-Warner and Sprint. Only thing is that they use entire rooms filled with 500 server racks and we only use three (racks).
saturday outing
boy oh boy we walked a long way today. eric and i decided to go to the shopping district of steinway street. we originally were just going to pop into goodwill and the salvation army, but ended up spending more time in payless shoe source (woohoo!) and gap. eric got a new pair of tennies since his were a year old and a little too ratty. they’re acutally really cool and normal looking. payless is getting alot better, but you can always find velcro shoes! good ‘ol payless…eric also got some more work clothes from gap. ::sigh:: i’m so proud of eric! after 5 years of my patient and subtle 😉 hints he’s taking my fashion advice! yay! 🙂 i also got a green sweater that was on sale. then we headed back home. oh, we also stopped by bath and body works to get a nice pumpkin air freshener to make the house smell festive. overall a very productive and relaxing day. and now for star wars!

here’s eric on steinway patiently waiting for me to get out of bath and body works.

a very exciting picture of the freeway from the bridge on the walk home.

here’s a picture of eric on the aforementioned bridge.
