job offer/honeymooners/dog food.

I got my first job offer today. It’s for a pretty small company (which I actually like better than working for a huge one.) I have another interview on Friday, and we’ll see how that one goes, but I really like the company that gave me the offer today. If I don’t find anything else by next week, I’m going to take it. The job involves supporting their network and doing face-to-face technical support (which is way better than phone support in my opinion.)

In other news, I heard from Kit yesterday. I was in Staples buying heavy (and expensive) paper for resumes when I got a call from him telling me that he was in New York (JFK airport to be more specific.) Unfortunately, there was no time to go see them or do anything with them, but I’m glad that they made it back safely from their honeymoon. They sure picked the right time to fly though ’cause if it had been a day earlier, they would have been caught up in a huge thunderstorm.

In 5 more days, Jabba will have his first birthday so today we went to the pet store and bought him his first batch of adult food and a good selection of new toys for him to play with (but not until his birthday!) Candice is going to make him a liver flavored cake and decorate it and want to get a little hat. I’m sure there will be pictures too.

A beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Candice and I had a pretty busy day today. We did some laundry in the morning… actually, we washed and dried every towel in the entire house (Don’t ask.) Then, we had lunch and got ready to go into town. We took the subway to Manhatten and got some super cotton paper to print our resumes on, and then went to H&M (department store) to get some clothes. H&M is actually growing on me. The first time we went there I was tired and in a bad mood, so I hated the atmosphere there, but this time I didn’t find it to be so bad. Poor Jabba was really hungry by the time we got back, but he’s such a good puppy–no accidents in the house!

Scientists invent pee-powered battery | The Register

hmm.. couldn’t pass this one up. Where do these people come up with these things? Hmm.. let’s get together and brainstorm for new power source ideas. OK. Any thoughts? Well, apparently somebody thought this was a good idea… And, of course, due to key-word association, a link at the bottom of that page leads you to this gem: Man urinates his way out of avalanche. yee-hah.

a new day, a new weather system.

Well, today is quite a different day than yesterday. It’s overcast and about 75 degrees out–very nice. Apparently, thousands of people are without power over here in the northeast because of the massive thunderstorms yesterday. We live about 8 blocks from a huge powerplant and so I don’t think we’ll lose power anytime soon, thankfully. But just in case, we have our UPS battery backups, flashlights, and candles ready. Today, now that the storm has passed, we’re going to continue on our trip downtown for some errands–fighting our way through tourists and business people on the streets of Manhatten.

Hot August Nights (with rain and thunder)

The heat index here right now (7:30pm) is about 105 degrees (temp+humidity)–but the funny thing is, there’s a thunderstorm outside. Rain, thunder & lightening, the whole bit. Candice and I were going to go downtown today, but we decided to stay in and ordered ourselves a pizza for dinner. We haven’t had much time to eat out or go do many fun things since we’ve been here because we’ve been trying to put our house together and looking for work. Things are coming along, but we’re still waiting for a couple of our boxes to come from California. Right now for entertainment we watch DVDs on the laptop. We’re looking to buy a small TV from someone on craigslist pretty soon so we can watch some shows. ::KA-KRRAAASH–BBOOOOOMMM:: Sorry, that was just the thunder outside. This weather is so bizarre.

Saturday–a very hot day in NYC.

Today we had Matt and Samantha (our friends who convinced us to move all the way over here from California) over this evening for the first time to our new place. Since it’s about a mile from their place, they decided to take a cab, which, under the circumstances was probably a good idea. Let me explain. Today, New York City broke the all-time power consumption record because of the massive heat-wave that is making this city a miserable place to be right now. Outside it reached temperatures of 100 degrees with, oh, about 85% humidity or so. And, of all things, it even decided to rain today–it was cloudy most of the day, so I don’t even want to think about how hot it would have been in the direct sunlight. Whew! Anyway, back to our evening… we had a delicious dinner that Candice prepared from scratch–Mexican Rice, Beans, and Enchiladas. Then we watched Ocean’s Twelve, which was alright. I’m sweating up a storm right now just sitting at the computer, even though it’s midnight, it still hasn’t cooled down much. ::sigh:: I can’t wait until Autumn…

network plus what?

Well, I’m proud to announce that I am now a Network+ Certified Technician. I took my test this morning at this place not too far from where we live (on the train, that is.) I should be getting my printed certificate in the mail in a couple weeks. Now I just need to update my resume… Next, I’m probably going to be trying to tackle a Cisco certification.

We’ve been cleaning up the house a bit because Matt and Samantha are coming over to visit tomorrow. It’s still really hot and humid over here–I really can’t wait until it cools down a bit in August. Not much else new to report on, unfortunately.

networking.

I’m signed up to take my Network+ certification exam tomorrow (Friday, Aug 12.) I should have actually taken it a long time ago, but I just never got around to it. Hopefully having that certification will help me a little in my job hunt. Today we’re going to take Jabba over to Lorrie’s where he can play with the other dogs. (I think sometimes he gets bored around here.) More job hunting on the way today… and some laundry too. Yipee!
